TEETH - GAPS, CAUSES, AND TREATMENT

A gap or space between teeth is called diastema and it is particularly more common in upper front teeth.

It appears in both adults and kids. Gaps between teeth are very normal in babies and kids, and these gaps are automatically closed by themselves by the child turns on 8 or 9 or when their permanent teeth come through. The gaps between the teeth are usually 2 mm or smaller and these gaps help in the eruption of permanent teeth in good alignment in the jaw because permanent teeth are bigger than milk teeth.

And if the gaps are more than 2 mm it indicates gaps are due to some other reasons then you have to check with a dentist.

Other Reasons for Gaps between Teeth

Mismatch of jaw and tooth size:-

Some persons have very small teeth and a big jaw which leads to gaps between teeth.

Missing teeth:-

Some teeth are missed in the jaw due to not formation or blocked by bone and gum.

Undersized teeth:-

Some teeth that are smaller than other teeth in the jaw also form gaps.

Usually, lateral incisors-the teeth on either side of the two upper front teeth that are prominently small or missing create gaps.

Habits:-

Thumb sucking, lip sucking, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, and similar habits cause pressure on the upper front teeth leads to proclination [forwarding] of teeth and gaps.

Gum Disease:-

In people with severe gum disease causes loss of bone around the teeth, which leads to loosening of teeth and gaps.

Lingual frenum or "Tongue-tie":-

Tongue-tie is where a strip of tissue connecting the tongue and bottom of the mouth. In some cases, severe tongue-tie prevents movement of the tongue and poking the lower central incisors which leads to gaps.

Oversized labial frenum:-

The labial frenum is the tissue that extends from the underside of the upper lip to the gums of the upper front central incisors.

If the labial frenum tissue is large, it causes a gap between the upper central incisors.

Treatment

If the diastema or gap present in children then no need to worry,it will close automatically.

But if the gap is due to some other reason or the person wants to close the gap then the following are some options:

Orthodontic treatment

Fixed appliances

Braces are used to treat gaps. These braces put pressure on teeth to move and closing the gap with complete treatment.

Removable appliances

Hear some plate-type appliances are used to move teeth to close the gaps.

Veneers and crowns

Veneers and crowns especially suitable when a patient has small diastema or gap.

Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain pieces that cover only the front part of teeth.

Crowns are thicker than veneers and that covers the entire tooth.

Composite restorations

Composite resins are used to fill very small gaps between the front teeth. Resins are applied to the tooth and hardened by a light source.

Dental implants and a bridge

If the diastema is due to a missing tooth then dental implants or a bridge are indicated.

A dental implant is a metal screw inserting directly into the jaw bone in the missing tooth place.

A dental bridge is a false tooth held in a missing tooth place by taking support from adjacent teeth.

Surgery

When the diastema is due to oversized labial frenum or due to tongue-tie then frenectomy [a procedure to remove the excess tissue] is recommended.

Gum disease treatment

Severe Gum disease causes infection of the bone and surrounding tissue of the tooth which leads to gaping and tooth loss.

If the infection is mild to moderate scaling and oral antibiotics help to remove the infection.

But in case of severe infection needs some surgery to remove tartar from beneath the gums.

Once the gums are healthy the dentist will use the above methods to close gaps.

Prevention

If the diastema is due to gum disease or due to habits, it can be preventable:

  • brushing teeth twice daily morning and night.
  • flossing teeth regularly.
  • avoiding thumb sucking, lip sucking and helps the children to break the habit.
  • regular dental check-up's and cleaning.
